What is an Ulcer? A sore that develops on the lining of the oesophagus, stomach or small intestine. Ulcers occur when stomach acid damages the lining of the digestive tract. Common causes include the bacteria H. Pylori and anti-inflammatory pain relievers including aspirin. Upper abdominal pain is a common symptom.  Treatment usually includes medication to decrease stomach acid production. If it is caused by bacteria, antibiotics may be required. How are ulcers caused? The most common  causes  of peptic  ulcers  are infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and long-term use of aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (Advil, Aleve, others). The  Spanish flu , also known as the  1918 flu pandemic , was an unusually deadly  influenza pandemic  caused by the  H1N1 influenza A virus . Lasting about 15 months from  spring  1918 (northern hemisphere) to early  summer  1919,  it infected 500 million people – about a third of the world's population at the time.  The death toll is estimated to have been anywhere from 17 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million, making it one of the  deadliest pandemics  in human history.
